McAfee’s “DAT” file version 5958 is causing widespread problems with Windows XP SP3. The affected systems will enter a reboot loop and loose all network access. We have individual reports of other versions of Windows being affected as well. However, only particular configurations of these versions appear affected. The bad DAT file may infect individual workstations as well as workstations connected to a domain. The use of “ePolicyOrchestrator”, which is used to update virus definitions across a network, appears to have lead to a faster spread of the bad DAT file. The ePolicyOrchestrator is used to update “DAT” files throughout enterprises. It can not be used to undo this bad signature because affected system will lose network connectivity.

Anecdotal numbers of affected computers could reach a final tally that reaches into the millions.

Nilay Patel at Engadget quotes a statement from McAfee

The faulty update has been removed from McAfee download servers for corporate users, preventing any further impact on those customers. We are not aware of significant impact on consumer customers and believe we have effectively limited such occurrence.

BitDefender PressCenter
Faulty Update for 64 bit Operating Systems
22 March 2010

We understand your disappointment , we have solved the problem for many of our users already and we are continuing to work relentlessly to rectify the problem for all users still affected.
Yesterday around 8:20am PST, an update that we were working on was uploaded prematurely in our servers. This update affected only products running on Windows 64-bit systems. The update affected some of our home user product line as well as BitDefender Business Client and BitDefender Security for File Servers. Certain BitDefender and Windows files have been detected as Trojan.FakeAlert.5 and have been moved to quarantine. Only exe ,dll and other binary files have been quarantined (no pictures or documents). Consequently, for some systems, BitDefender did not run anymore, applications did not work or Windows could not start. By 11am PST, our team had reversed the faulty update so no additional users would be affected. Of those affected, we believe that only a fraction were not able to apply the new update, and from those many have already been assisted. We continue to support those of our users who currently require further assistance. Our teams are working around the clock to minimize the impact, including one-on-one support to fix the issue as quickly as possible.

We have been providing information to our users via support articles that are updated regularly as we implement solutions for the various customer configurations that are brought to our attention.

Home users will find solutions here:

http://www.bitdefender.com/site/KnowledgeBase/consumer/#638

BitDefender Business Client users will find solutions here:

http://www.bitdefender.com/site/KnowledgeBase/consumer/#643

BitDefender Security for File Servers users will find solutions here:

http://www.bitdefender.com/site/KnowledgeBase/consumer/#642

For those customers who are not able to find a solution via the support articles, we kindly ask them to contact our support team directly via email, chat, phone or forum at http://www.bitdefender.com/site/Main/contactEmail/ for home users and http://www.bitdefender.com/site/Main/contactEmailBusiness/ for business solutions. We strongly advise that users only follow guidance issued by BitDefender representatives, who have the expertise to address the most immediate problems in all configurations.

If you like Firefox’s tabbed browsing, you’re going to love tabbed email. Tabbed email lets you load emails in separate tabs so you can quickly jump between them. Perhaps you’re responding to an email and need to refer back to an earlier email. Tabbed email lets you keep multiple emails open for easy reference.

Search

The new search interface in Thunderbird 3 contains filtering and timeline tools to pinpoint the exact email you’re looking for. Thunderbird 3 also indexes all of your emails to help you search even faster.

Message Archive

If you think you’re going to need an email in the future but want it out of your inbox without deleting it, archive it! Archiving helps you manage your inbox and put your email into a new archive folder system.

Microsoft has notified software developers that some of the technologies used by security, backup, disk utility and network management programs are incompatible with the Windows Vista to Windows 7 upgrade process. This is a direct result of Microsoft’s design decisions and impacts most antivirus solutions that scan network data.

ESET has verified that the Personal firewall module in both versions 3 and 4 of ESET Smart Security is affected. The problem only affects computers being upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows Vista SP1 and SP2. Customers working with new installations of Windows 7 will not experience these problems, nor will customers upgrading from Windows XP (which performs a clean install).

ESET NOD32 Antivirus is not affected.

ESET is working closely with Microsoft as we approach the official launch of Windows 7 to address any potential compatibility issues and promptly communicate issues like this to our valued partners. Further information is available at http://www.eset.com/windows7upgrade.

Why does the icon turn red after installing Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008? (4.0)
KB Solutions ID: SOLN2254|Last Revised: May 27, 2009

An incompatibily between Service Pack 2 and the 4.0 versions of ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus prevents the proper functioning of real-time file-system protection. The ESET icon next to the system clock will turn red, notifying you that maximum protection is not ensured. It may notify you that your ESET security product needs to be reinstalled. Doing so will not rectify the incompatibility. An updated build for version 4.0 ESET security products is currently in development and will be released as soon as possible. To resolve the issue temporarily, follow the steps below to uninstall 4.0 and install the 3.0 version of your ESET security product :
