Spybot-S&D version 1.5.2 released

by certifiedbug on January 30, 2008

in Programs, Security

Anti-spyware program by Patrick Kolla and Team Spybot.

Spybot-S&D 1.5 has quite a lot of advantages over version 1.4: improved compatibility, more effective detections and new functions. Between all the positive feedback we received, there were also some things that needed to be improved: the immunization sometimes needed to be applied twice before sticking, many users wanted the file shredder back, and it was impossible to remove entries from the user blacklist in the Internet Explorer plugin. But first of all, we apologize for the long starting time of Spybot-S&D 1.5.1 to all users. This item has been fixed now in this new version 1.5.2.

We are convinced that you will work with the best Spybot ever: Spybot-S&D 1.5.2 has all advantages, but no handicaps over all previous versions!

Throughout the next days our partners and ourselves will provide you with version 1.5.2. This version will also be available through the integrated update within the next days.

ASK Approaches WinPatrol

by certifiedbug on January 18, 2008

in Programs, Security

The sales pitch to include a toolbar with WinPatrol was compelling. I’m told that the my reputation wouldn’t be affected and I would be providing my customers with a service by including the free toolbar. All the companies currently installing the toolbar are very happy. He even leaked the news that another well known Anti-Spyware vendor who would be moving to the dark side soon.

Labels: IAC, Lavasoft, Toolbar, WinPatrol, Zwinky

I’m going to have to pass and keep WinPatrol simple and pure.

I applaud you Bill, a true blue honest vendor with a great product.

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4

by certifiedbug on January 12, 2008

in Programs, Security

A lot of bug fixes.

It is important not only to keep Sun Java up to date, but also to remove older versions which have security holes and can be exploited. Vulnerabilities in old Sun Java versions may be partly responsible for Vundo/Winfixer infections.

Before un-installing your previous version, first download the latest upgrade, as of today Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4. Just in case you experience any difficulty in obtaining a copy.

Download from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/?intcmp=1281 and save, do not install yet.

  • 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.
  • 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.
  • 4. Install the latest version which you previously downloaded.

To verify a successful install: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Congratulations!

You have the recommended Java installed (1.6.0_04).

Kaspersky Lab flagged Windows Explorer as infected with a low-risk virus, Huhk-C. (12.19.2007)

Kaspersky quickly released an update and advice on how to recover legitimate system and application files from quarantine.

However that won’t help users who set their software to automatically delete infected files.

Kaspersky Lab Forum

Kaspersky is a good program and one I recommend, however the lesson being, think twice before setting any security program to auto delete.

Way back when, I actually paid for a browser from a McAfee afflicate.

McAfee promptly deleted it as a worm, denied it and then under pressure confessed and offered me a new download, which I declined, but lesson learnt.

As reported, this is the third time in a year Symantec has caused damage to users running CYBERsitter software.

Symantec on Monday released a virus definition update that incorrectly identified Solid Oak’s CyberSitter filtering program as a virus. Depending on the version of Symantec’s Norton Antivirus product that Solid Oak customers were running, CyberSitter files were either deleted or banned from use by Norton, according to Solid Oak.

On Friday, a Symantec spokesman said that the company had issued a fix.

Before Symantec issued that fix, apprantly thousands of Solid Oak customers lost Internet access.

Adobe Flash update

by certifiedbug on December 4, 2007

in Programs, Security

Adobe® Flash® Player 9 Update 3 is available for download.

It is wise to keep flash updated as there are exploits which use it to install nasty stuff on your computer. You can check which version you have installed here.

If you use Firefox, the Flashblock extension is useful for blocking all Flash content from loading automatically and allows selective activation and whitelisting of sites.

Windows Live Writer

by certifiedbug on November 20, 2007

in Programs

I tried this program awhile back when it was first released and didn’t much care for it at the time. However Writer has greatly improved and I see it being very useful for blogging on the fly.

To be continued, edited and updated as I try it out.

Update:The ability to see exactly how your post will look before you publish it is great, with four viewing or editing modes. Normal, Web Layout, Web Preview and HTML Code.
WLW now supports XHTML. With Live Writer open> Weblog> Edit Weblog Settings> Advanced> Markup Type.

12-12-07. Windows Live Writer was updated to version number 12.0.1367.1128.

This update is being distributed via Microsoft Update, so if you have chosen to have important updates automatically installed, you should receive this update automatically. If you aren’t automatically getting updates, you can open Windows Update, check for updates, and the update will appear in the list of available updates.

Warning about Symantec detections

by certifiedbug on November 18, 2007

in Programs

If you have Norton installed on your computers you should pay attention to this.

Chris Quirke’s Blog: Norton Security Scan - False Positives

Unfortunately, it detects protective settings applied by Spyware Blaster and similar tools, as being the malware these tools are protecting against.

Hosts News: Symantec detects suspicious entries in the MVPS HOSTS file

… seems Symantec added a new update SecurityRisk.URLRedir which they describe as “detection for suspicious entries added to the hosts file”
