Tying Google Affiliate Network
September 28, 2010
In one of the few areas of Internet advertising where Google is not dominant – where just three years ago Google had no offering at all – Google now uses tying to climb towards a position of dominance. In particular, using its control over web search, Google offers preferred search ad placement and superior search ad terms to the advertisers who agree to use Google Affiliate Network. Competing affiliate networks cannot match these benefits, and Google’s bundling strategy threatens to grant Google a position of power in yet another online advertising market.

Yahoo! Search Blog
As we continue to work toward implementing the Yahoo! and Microsoft Search Alliance, we’re reaching some additional significant milestones that we want to share with you today.
Later this week, we will begin transitioning the back-end technology for Yahoo! Search in the U.S. and Canada (English) over to the Microsoft platform, and will post an update when the organic search transition is complete for both Web and mobile searches. Keep an eye out for the “Powered by Bing” indicator at the bottom of our search results page, which will indicate that you are viewing listings from Microsoft. And of course, as we’ve stated before, you’ll continue to enjoy the same enhanced Yahoo! experience that surrounds the listings themselves – such as rich results, Search Assist suggestions, site filters, related topic suggestions, and more to come.

Data Protection — European Commission, 26 May 2010.
The Article 29 Data Protection Working Party, a group of European data protection authorities, today told the three major search engine operators – Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft – that their methods of making users’ search data anonymous still do not comply with the European Union’s Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC. [PDF]
The Article 29 Working Party recognises the search engines’ efforts to bring their policies in line with European data protection legislation. However, in letters sent to the companies, the Working Party urges them to use an outside auditor to verify their commitments to make users’ internet search data truly anonymous.
