Iran confirms Stuxnet attack

Although some computers at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear reactor were infected by the Stuxnet worm, none of the facility’s crucial control systems were affected, Iranian officials claimed Sunday.

The news followed Saturday’s admission by Iran that Stuxnet had infected at least 30,000 computers in the country. The worm, which researchers have dubbed the most sophisticated malware ever, targets Windows PCs that manage large-scale industrial-control systems in manufacturing and utility companies.

Microsoft Technology to Protect Children

Microsoft PressPass

Over the past 20 years, the volume of child pornography traded online has exploded. At Microsoft Corp., we’re working to develop technology, such as PhotoDNA, that will help fight it. But technology alone can’t solve this problem; widespread awareness and action are needed, so we’re asking you to join us in the campaign for A Childhood for Every Child. Because these horrifying photos are trafficked secretly by pedophiles, the children suffering this abuse have essentially become invisible to the public. We need to bring this issue out of the shadows and into the open. Childhood should be a wonderful—not terrifying—experience.

Windows 7 and Netbooks

Brandon LeBlanc likes his Dell Mini 9 netbook as much as I do mine, Santa brought me a netbook

At the Windows Blog he writes,

For the first time, we will be making Windows 7 Starter available worldwide on small notebook PCs. We are also going to enable Windows 7 Starter customers the ability to run as many applications simultaneously as they would like, instead of being constricted to the 3 application limit that the previous Starter editions included.

I plan to install Windows 7 Home Premium on my own mini and a higher version on the desktops.

Yesterday I noticed the Mini 9 had disappeared from Dell’s website and instead they are promoting their new entry the Mini 10v, along with the Mini 10 and Mini 12.

Outlined agenda under Obama Administration.

  • Strengthen Federal Leadership on Cyber Security: Declare the cyber infrastructure a strategic asset and establish the position of national cyber advisor who will report directly to the president and will be responsible for coordinating federal agency efforts and development of national cyber policy.
  • Initiate a Safe Computing R&D Effort and Harden our Nation’s Cyber Infrastructure: Support an initiative to develop next-generation secure computers and networking for national security applications. Work with industry and academia to develop and deploy a new generation of secure hardware and software for our critical cyber infrastructure.
  • Protect the IT Infrastructure That Keeps America’s Economy Safe: Work with the private sector to establish tough new standards for cyber security and physical resilience.
  • Prevent Corporate Cyber-Espionage: Work with industry to develop the systems necessary to protect our nation’s trade secrets and our research and development. Innovations in software, engineering, pharmaceuticals and other fields are being stolen online from U.S. businesses at an alarming rate.
  • Develop a Cyber Crime Strategy to Minimize the Opportunities for Criminal Profit: Shut down the mechanisms used to transmit criminal profits by shutting down untraceable Internet payment schemes. Initiate a grant and training program to provide federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies the tools they need to detect and prosecute cyber crime.
  • Mandate Standards for Securing Personal Data and Require Companies to Disclose Personal Information Data Breaches: Partner with industry and our citizens to secure personal data stored on government and private systems. Institute a common standard for securing such data across industries and protect the rights of individuals in the information age.

Santa brought me a netbook

December 31, 2008

A Dell Inspiron Mini with Windows XP pre-installed, I love it. I removed the bloated pre-installed 30 day trial McAfee security suite, and installed the free versions of Avira’s AntiVir anti virus and Comodo’s firewall I already had an installer for the standalone firewall, not being fond of suites. The Mini measures 9.1 x 6.8 [...]

Doubling Laptop Battery Life

June 15, 2008

Now researchers at Intel believe that they can double a laptop’s battery life without changing the battery itself. Instead, they would optimize power management–system wide–of the operating system, screen, mouse, chips inside the motherboard, and devices attached to USB ports. http://www.technologyreview.com/Infotech/20901/?a=f

Humans faced extinction

April 24, 2008

An extensive genetic study suggests human beings were close to extinction 150,000 years ago. Perhaps as few as 2,000 individuals split into small groups living in isolation for nearly a hundred thousand years before regrouping and migrating out of Africa. Studies using mitochondrial DNA which is passed down through mothers, have traced modern humans to [...]
